Farewell, Not So Much

So I’m bidding farewell to PhotoCapM for now. It may rise from the ashes one day, but for now it plagues me a little. Closing it was a hard decision to make.

Why? Some may ask. Well, my interests in photography have changed a little. No, I’m not leaving photography. I’m just redirecting my efforts a little and PhotoCapM has really become something that nags me more than inspires me in that redirection.

Things have changed a little with my desires related to the craft and the art world in general. Although I love photography, it is not my great love and so spending time forcing it to BE my great love is really counter productive. This does not mean that I won’t have a web presence. I certainly will. Its unveiling is coming very soon, so look for that announced here.

On November 1, 2011 I will check the box that says, “Hide”, for this site and no one will be able to access it anymore. As I said, a new site is coming. Actually several new sites. These will truly reflect the great love have in the art form that has suited and serves me best.

I hope you all understand and hope that you will follow me to my new sites when they are up and running. This has been a great trip and thanks for traveling with me. Look for that new site soon. I will announce it here, as well as on the social networks.

Best wishes to all of you!

Mike

Love at Twenty

I would like to tell you a story. It is really more than a story, but about the beginning of a very important journey. It is one that I have told you about off and on over many years and if you have listened you know it is about love. Sit quietly while I tell about two who became one and love through today after twenty years.

She was beautiful. My first thoughts characterized her as a “minx”. Her sultry eyes beckoned me to follow and being the idiot I was in youth, I did not hear the cry. Yet she continued to pursue and I eventually woke to something that would change my life forever.

A young secretary and retail clerk she was and I a simple security officer. We soon dated and found that we had much in common, but most importantly immediate undeniable love. Young and hungry for each other, our trip toward matrimony was a quick one. Three, then four weeks past and I knew that she was the one. Yes, the one.

It was love that made me do it. I popped the question in the fifth week of our whirlwind relationship and was granted a yes. Ah, but youth, it is a quandary where matters of the heart are concerned. Typical of young men, stupidity seemed to reign supreme.

Fright filled me to the point of doubt and the result was but a four week engagement. We parted over stupidity as I said above. Not hers, but mine.

For months the relationship was on and then off, a fight with each. Someone must have been looking over us however, for the love we felt remained. Tumultuous was the characterization of our bond and at times we wondered, together and alone, whether or not we would come to be the one we were designed to be.

Together and alone, it began there I think. Two becoming one as the fight to remain one took hold of the hearts of the two involved. The result? Certainly growth and maybe a lot of understanding.

Months, I said, and months it was until a moment came where love could no longer be denied. Our call became, in just one moment, the vindication of love neglected. Matrimony arrived firmly on the horizon and would not be quelled by any means of the past.

She was beautiful as I have already said and say again today. I say it over and over with everyday knowing it fact and remember that I am the most fortunate of men. I was not just luckiest guy to ever find love, but the only guy to find it permanent with her. No, it is well beyond anything the world might equate to “lucky”. We chose each other to love and that demands luck stand aside.

Love is still present, more so, as it has grown with every happy and joyous moment, even in those times when trouble seems master. But command, it cannot for love truly does conquer all. Weakness strengthened as we hold each other tight through all times up or down. Lift, we struggle to do it in every waking moment, helping the other reach and achieve what we desire for ourselves and one another.

For me, she is my life. Without question there can be no other. I adore her with all my heart, mind, soul, and body. To me she is love. God only and alone stands higher than she in my sight. Blessed by Him in having her at my side He has made me the man that I came to be through the love He grants through her for my sake.

No poem can communicate. No image can illustrate. Only love can demonstrate my desires and hopes for her. She chose me twenty years ago, an unworthy man in youth, and I thank God daily for it. I live to love and care for her, the woman who twenty years ago said “I do”, and with that all quandaries regarding hope are seamlessly resolved.

Yes, that is my story. It is about love so unique and special it is difficult to tell, because no one can really know the heart of the matter outside of the two made one. Especially after twenty. I hope you see it for what it is. A love story at twenty continuing beyond the next twenty and a new knowledge that love truly conquers it all.

To Rhonda,

I love you with all my heart. You are my life and bring me hope moment by moment. We celebrate today twenty years of marriage and I look to the next twenty as we build upon the love we already share with each other. Thank you for choosing me and know that I choose you again and again daily.

I Love You,

Mike

Just a Heads Up!

Just a heads up to those of you who read PhotoCapM. There are a boatload of changes coming. PhotoCapM has always focused primarily on photography and that will not change. It will always be here with new content regarding the world of photography. At least mine and my guest writer’s thoughts on it.

Did you know I am a writer too? Some of you do. Hence the need for some changes. I would really like to introduce you to the writing world as well. One more thing…

Something special is coming toward the end of this year and I am very excited about it. I just know you would love for me to tell what it is, but I don’t “roll” that way. Sorry…

Just a tease.

I will keep you in the loop as changes are made and hope they will provide for you broader experience with the things we all enjoy talking about.

New posts coming out tomorrow and Saturday on the last City of Rocks National Reserve trip last weekend, so look for those. Until then keep your camera handy and SHOOT!

Tsunami Pictures: Epic Waves, Earthquake Shock Japan

Tsunami Pictures: Epic Waves, Earthquake Shock Japan.

In so many ways recent events, including the earthquake and tsunami that have impacted Japan and other parts of the world, bring to the forefront in the minds of all caring people just how fragile we are. We have seen large amounts of devastation all over the world in recent years. So many lives have been lost and impacted by natural occurrences.

These can make us feel helpless, and not just those who are directly impacted, but those who look on in horror as the unexplainable unfolds. In reality, we can help in many ways. Not all of us can board an airplane and fly to the assistance of those who are experiencing such devastation. Some of us wish we could, but most would just be in the way.

Do you want to help? Then check out my good friend Bryan Jones’ post on Jonesblog. He starts his post with the following.

As I write this, people in Japan are struggling with their greatest challenges since WW II as noted by Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan.”

Bryan took the time to compile a list of known genuine charities that are directly involved with the relief efforts in Japan. Have a look and determine if you might be able to contribute to the efforts already underway to assist those who are suffering. You are not helpless and can make a difference in bringing a little relief to those who are.

A 365 Hostile Take Over

When I embarked on the 30 Post 365 Project, I did not think things through very well as they relate to my blog. It is a wonderful thing to be able to share your daily project with the Internet world. Truly, it is.

However, I did not think about the fact that my site would be inundated with photographs from the 365. My concern is that the articles I write on occasion will be lost on the daily process of posting. I think a change may be in order.

I started the 365 here and will finish the 365 here, but there is a change coming related to how and where I will post my “written about photographic work”. Yes, a 365 is “work”, but I am finding this it is more about getting it done and having fun than anything else. There are times when I would like to address the more serious side of photography however and my fear is that it will go unnoticed.

Be watching for the major change at the end of this month or the beginning of the next. In the meantime, please continue visiting this site for both the 30 Post 365 Project and the occasional article about photography.

Until Next Time…

A New Year, A New Challenge

First let me say, HAPPY NEW YEAR! I pray that for you this year brings many many blessings to you and your families. You are all in our thoughts tonight as we celebrate the birth of new year.

Second, and to the point of this article, I grew a new appendage today. It sits on my hip and is about the size of cell phone. I visited one of my local “toy stores”, Best Buy this time, and purchased a Canon PowerShot SD1400. Why did I purchase a new point and shoot? Because I have decided to carry a camera with me everywhere I go and the features and size of the little Canon will fit that need nicely.

Yesterday I wrote about my desire to do a 365 project this year. For those who may not know what a “365 project” is, it is where photographs are taken, one selected, and posted for every day of the year. I have been toying with taking on the challenge of doing this project since I read Bill McCarroll’s article in PhotographyBB’s Online Magazine (“Are You Ready for a Project 365?”, Issue #32, September 2010, p31).

I also wrote about WordPress’ Post a Day Challenge and decided to fit these two concepts together. Throughout the day today I have put some major thought into this idea and with that came the visit to the “toy store” and my new appendage. In his article, Bill writes about his experience with doing his 365 project and noted that he had made the decision to purchase a camera that was highly portable. Like Bill, I too used to carry around my Digital SLR and at some point during the summer decided to lighten the load I was carrying everywhere I went.

Unfortunately, that meant that I would have to give up carrying a camera all together. My image making dropped off the chart. Of course, the fact that I was not carrying my camera anymore had only a little to do with the lack of image making my part. I also made the decision to focus on writing for a few months and that cut deeply into my photography time.

There was another concept that “popped” into my mind while thinking about doing these projects. It was this; I need to photograph at least 30 minutes a day everyday. When people who are interested in improving their skills and abilities in photography ask me what things they might do to accomplish their goal, I give them a short list of suggestions. One of those suggestions is to spend at least 30 minutes a day shooting.

So, with these projects I am combining I have decided to reestablish the habit of shooting at least 30 minutes a day with one of my two cameras. I will reserve a full 30 minute period, or more depending, everyday. This will allow me to accomplish the photography part of the 365 project. After I have made my photo selection for the day, my best shot, I will then post the photograph in at least two places. First, on Flickr and then here on PhotoCapM. I will write about the photo or provide written content that is relevant to the day. That will meet the requirement for the Post a Day Challenge from WordPress.

Well, there it is. The only thing left to do is give a title to this project of mine and I believe I have the perfect one. The title is the “30 Post 365 Project”. I will be adding a new category to my blog with this title, so that those articles on PhotoCapM dedicated to the project can be singled out.

In finishing this article there are two things I would like to encourage you to do. First, read Bill’s article in PhotographyBB’s Online Magazine to see where I found some encouragement and great advice on doing a project like this one. Second, consider doing your own project, whether it be a 365 project or the Post a Day Challenge. Participating in something like this has demonstrated great rewards and tremendous growth in those who I have associated with, so take it under advisement and decided whether or not this might be something appropriate for you as well.

Look for the next article and the first photograph from the 30 Post 365 Project later today. Again, happy New Year to you and yours!

Until Next Time…
