Photowalking Utah is one of the best photo clubs to be a part of in Utah. Yesterday an event called the Sunset and Light Painting Photowalk was held at Black Rock by the Great Salt Lake near Saltair. Everyone was welcome to participate as is the case with all Photowalking Utah events.
Last night was all about light painting. Paul Dennison and Scott Stringham hosted the photowalk, which started around 5 PM. The event was well attended by photographers from all over the Salt Lake City area even though it was cold and rainy.
Paul and Scott took the group through what the photographers might expect during the walk. Then they provided some education about camera settings, an overview of items they would use to do the painting, and talked about how the weather might effect the event. When finished, everyone headed out for the short walk to the area where the light painting would be done. Some of the photographers took the opportunity to venture out on their own until the light painting began.
Throughout the event, Scott and Paul assisted those involved with getting the right settings to capture that perfect moment in the dark where light can come alive when properly manipulated. The reaction from the participants seemed extremely positive and by all accounts everyone had fun and learned a lot during the event. The Sunset and Light Painting Photowalk was an excellent idea. Many photographers in the area have seen Scott’s and Paul’s work with light painting, so there was significant interest in holding an event like this one.
Scott and Paul run a meet up almost every Friday night called Friday Night Fotogs, where they shoot a variety of subjects, but they almost always involved photography at night (Visit Friday Night Fotogs on Facebook and Flickr). Light painting and lightning are two of the more popular Friday night meet ups. They are also both members of Photowalking Utah.
Over all the event was very well organized. Even when the weather turned extremely fowl (cold, wind, rain, and then snow) the participants remained determined to capture the light filled moments. Scott and Paul proved themselves to be excellent instructors and wonderful Photowalking Utah hosts.

What are you doing next Thursday, one week from today? Most of us in the US will be celebrating Thanksgiving with our family and friends. FOOD, FOOTBALL, and FUN are the words that come to mind when we think about Thanksgiving. Unless your
My desire in the end is a hope that the results of putting in some leg work prior to the leg work of the walk will produce better made and well thought out images. I also think that by doing this I will waste less time looking around for something to shoot. It is my desire to “go pro” as an architectural photographer one day soon and I believe with that comes some responsibility to know what I am going to do and how I might go about doing it.
